The River

Ask me whether what I have done
is my life
Years pass and spring looks all the same
to me

Why does the blue bird
only sing in the rain?
I heard a poem once
the rhyme was her beauty
the spirit her love

Up there, up, up
in the clouds of time
her kindness in infinite time
and my soul pleading to let her go…

Darling, I can’t let you go and yet
I had to
Torn out of the arms of mother earth herself
The warm embrace of a woman’s heart
Oh, it turns boys to men and back to boys
again!

Lift me up in your love!
Let me go in your thoughts!
For I am just beginning
to become myself
my love
